— 2020 hunts —

Just as it was everywhere, 2020 was tough in the high country. From a record blizzard in September, to a very warm and dry October, success was hard to come by. We got it done though! We killed some elk and made some lifetime friendships with some great folks!

I love the way this smells. If you’ve ever spent any time in the spruce and aspen of the high country then you know what I mean. Throw in a little horse and mule sweat and it’s magical!

I feel I need to share my bucket list item which includes 5 Bar N Outfitters. I’ve been elk hunting 8 different times on my own unsuccessfully. Decided to cash in points for Colorado and hire an outfitter. Best decision 2 relatives and I could have made. 5 Bar N Outfitters is top notch. Their horses & mules worked well and plenty of animals to get us to and from camp and packing elk out. We had great camp accommodations, along with good food. Guides were so patient with us because a few of us needed to stop and catch a breather a little more often than most. They kept saying this is your hunt, we will go at whatever pace you like and are comfortable with. Big Thanks to them for that.
Very professional and talented guides that know elk and elk hunting. By the way I was successful and shot my first elk. A dandy 6x6. Also made some great new friendships that will last for years. Nights spent in the cook tent telling stories and laughing were great. I highly recommend 5 Bar N Outfitters for the trip of a lifetime for back country elk hunting.

How you like your bull meat??!!

The bull moose is the coolest game animal on the planet in my opinion. He strolls through camp every morning like he knows he’s the coolest game animal on the planet.

IT’S BEEN MANY, MANY YEARS SINCE THE FIRST TIME I HEARD A BULL ELKS BUGLE ECHO THROUGH THE TALL TIMBER OF THE ROCKY MOUNTAIN HIGH COUNTRY. I’VE HEARD HUNDREDS OF BUGLES SINCE THEN AND EVERY ONE IS AS THRILLING AS THE FIRST ONE. ABOUT TO BED DOWN FOR THE NIGHT AND SITTING LISTENING TO THE CRACKLING FIRE AND SEVERAL BULLS ARE GETTING TUNED UP FOR THE UPCOMING RUTTING SEASON. THEY KNOW WE ARE HERE. ARE THEY CHALLENGING US?…TAUNTING US? IT’S A SOUND I WILL NEVER GET TIRED OF HEARING. TAKE A LISTEN!!

This is the most man in the world right here. Still at it at 74 years old. Walked dozens of miles this season in country that’ll reduce lesser men to tears and he’s still at the top of the guide list with the most filled tags! They don’t make em like this no more, folks.
